About Naturopathic Medicine
Underlying naturopathic medicine is the theory that the human body has a very strong ability to prevent illness and heal itself when provided with the right nourishment and environment. The use of nutrition and various modalities of natural healing help support the body's innate healing systems. In cases where conventional therapy is required, naturopathic physicians work in concert with MDs to provide fully integrated treatment.

Naturopathic physicians are trained at accredited naturopathic medical schools during a four-year graduate level program. The program includes the same basic science courses as in traditional medical school, plus training in clinical nutrition, acupuncture, homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, psychology and counseling to encourage people to make lifestyle changes in support of their personal health.
Thirteen states and four Canadian provinces, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands issue licenses for the practice of naturopathic medicine, based on rigorous professional board exams. Once an ND has passed the exam, he/she may be licensed by a state or jurisdiction as a primary care, general practice physician.
Warning: Unfortunately, there are those who claim to have ND degrees, although they have not graduated from an accredited university—rather they have taken correspondence courses. This training is not authorized by The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. You can verify a practitioner's qualifications and schooling by visiting:
