Special from Bottom Line/Wealth
October 1, 2009

T ravel companies walloped by the recession are offering steep discounts to lure consumers this fall and winter. Thanks to high vacancy rates, you can find deals in temperate zones, often with a break on airfare thrown in. Popular spots now...

Hawaii. Developers built hundreds of new condominiums on Maui and Oahu during boom times. Now, with tourism down, owners are renting them out cheap. Two-bedroom beachfront units on Maui are available for as little as $77 a night. Go to www.vrbo.com or www.flipkey.com to see what’s on the market.

Las Vegas. The falloff in business conventions has hurt hotels, which are scrambling to fill up with tourists instead. Rooms at Excalibur, Harrah’s and other hotels on the Strip go for as little as $39 per night, and even the glamorous new Wynn hotel is posting rates as low as $159.

Cruise ships. Prices have sunk as a glut of new ships enters a weak market.

Example: Norwegian Cruise Line is offering mid-December Caribbean itineraries at $329 per person for five nights in an ocean-view cabin. For the best deals, use a travel agency specializing in cruises. At www.cruisecompete.com, travel agents fight to save you money.
