Best Spa Getaways for Mothers, Daughters, Granddaughters to Relax and Reconnect
Joan Rattner Heilman

Special from Bottom Line/Retirement
December 1, 2007

G irls’ getaways, especially for mothers and daughters (and granddaughters, nieces, sisters, daughters-in-law and aunts), are one of the hottest vacation trends these days. More and more women are leaving the guys home to watch the games and going somewhere together.

Although some women set forth on organized tours, golfing vacations or visits to Broadway, among the most popular destinations “just for the girls” are elegant spas where they’ll be outrageously pampered for a few days to a week. Spas report that their special packages for women only -- -that include accommodations, meals and such spa treatments as massages, mud packs, herbal wraps and facials -- -are a big hit with customers who want to spend time together without distraction or stress. It’s a time to relax, reminisce, reconnect, have a laugh about the “boys” back home -- and come away closer than before.

Here are some of my favorite spas around the country for these womanly getaways...

The Spa at Camelback Inn, Scottsdale, Arizona. For moms with daughters 18 or older (or sisters or nieces), the Mother-Daughter Spa Package includes two one-hour spa treatments per person per day and access to all of the spa amenities. There’s plenty of time to relax in the pool, take fitness classes, eat healthful food, meditate at sunset, rest in your luxurious room, drink a cup of peppermint-sage tea and indulge in an adobe clay purification treatment, an anti-aging facial or a head-to-toe vitamin C body treatment.

Cost starts at $519 a night for two, depending on the season.

Information: Spa at Camelback Inn (800-242-2635, www.camelbackinn.com).

Trump International Sonesta Beach Resort, Miami, Florida. Reconnect with your loved ones at this luxurious spa and hotel just north of Miami Beach. A weekend package includes a Swedish massage, facial, manicure and pedicure, breakfast, and a onetime 15% discount to any Bloomingdale’s department store. If you have any time to spare, you can spend it together chatting on the resort’s private beach or at the grotto-style pool complex with two pools, fountains and waterfalls.

The rate for two nights starts at $345 per person, double occupancy, depending on the season.

The Greenhouse, Arlington, Texas. Housed in a Southern-style mansion halfway between Dallas and Fort Worth, with a ratio of four staff to one client, you’ve never had it so good. It’s not cheap, but if you bring someone who has not stayed at the Greenhouse before, you can each get a break of $1,000 off the standard rate. Included are accommodations, all meals, facials, massages and other beauty treatments, fitness classes and transportation to and from the airport. During the occasional special mother/daughter weeks, you’ll hear lectures and attend workshops on family relationships -- in between body scrubs and mineral wraps.

Cost per person for the week (six nights, seven days) is $5,900 ($4,900 with the promotion).

The Golden Door Spa, Escondido, California. For ultimate luxury, spend a week at the renowned Golden Door in southern California, about 40 miles from San Diego. Founded in 1958 as the first major spa in the US for women, it was designed as a Zen-influenced “sanctuary for those seeking inner peace.” Its architecture was inspired by ancient Japanese country inns that catered to weary travelers.

Here, you and your companion will be pampered from head to toe for a week, with your own private trainers and a program of healthful gourmet cuisine, daily massage, meditation, facial and body treatments, manicure, pedicure, makeup lessons, herbal wraps, fitness classes, guided hikes and access to tennis courts, hiking trails and pools. About 20% of the spa’s guests are mothers and daughters who come to relax and spend quality time with each other. Mothers accompanied by one or more of another generation pay the full rate for themselves but only half for the younger members of the family.

Cost for seven days (seven nights), double occupancy, is $7,750 for mom, $3,875 for daughter (daughter-in-law, niece, etc.).

Information: Golden Door (800-424-0777, www.goldendoor.com).

Sanivan Holistic Retreat, Hurleyville, New York. In the Catskill Mountains about two hours from New York City, this spa has only three rooms and takes no more than six guests at a time. Mothers and daughters (or other female relatives or friends) get a special price that includes accommodations, organic meals, a body treatment or a facial, use of the sauna and pool, and personal healthful lifestyle instruction. Body treatments include shiatsu massage, therapeutic massage, hot stone massage and warm-oil massage. The philosophy is that body, mind and spirit are connected and can be healed by touch, the right foods and positive thinking.

Cost for mother and daughter is $500 per person for two nights.

Information: Sanivan Holistic Retreat (845-434-1849, www.sanivan.com).
